At the center of the enchanting rolling hills, dwelt a young shepherd. His being was mostly unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to tend to his herd of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the wind among the solo tree on the hilltop were his only associates. Day upon day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.

However, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty scheme.

Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he dashed into the village website screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a few days more. However, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
